Beyond the Conventional: First Impressions of the DS 3 E-Tense
Approaching the DS 3 E-Tense, it’s evident at once that this isn’t a car built to blend in. It’s a sensorial meeting, characterised by bold design solutions that differentiate it from its more traditional competitors. The flush-fitting door handles, for example, are more than just a salute to aerodynamic efficiency; they deliver a clean, unbroken reading that slips into view. When you come towards it with the key, they slide out with a pleasing, futuristic welcome that gives a clue as to the level of consideration engineering within. So there are the lights. The impressive DS signature diamond-pattern LED daytime running lights are not just for lighting; they are a symbol of intent and give you a unique and even jewel-like look on the road. From every angle, this car appears crisp, different, and thoroughly French, and promises an experience which is decidedly out of the ordinary.

Inside, the cabin is this notion of boutique luxury and obsessive attention to detail. It simply refrains from the minimalist, screen-heavy interiors that seem to be standard in the electric vehicle world. Rather than being greeted by a bland background, you are presented with a vibrant array of materials and shapes that are at once high-end and unique. The Performance Line trim comes with supportive seats covered in Alcantara, which is both a sporty and luxurious material, and special burlap-effect trim on the dashboard and doors brings an unusual, textural warmth. The diamond pattern from the exterior is repeated thoughtfully throughout the interior, from the tactile switchgear to the graphics on the digital instrument cluster, resulting in a unified and precisely created environment. It’s more curated than a garden-variety car interior, and your effort feels rewarded as you settle into your seat to begin your trip.
And while emotions aren’t what it is designed to provoke, the first drive demonstrates the peaceful and refined nature of the all-electric powertrain. The 54 kWh battery capacity ensures a competitive range, but it is the power delivery refinement that leaves the biggest impact. Starting up from rest, it’s all very smooth and very quiet. There’s no engine noise, there’s no vibration, just a smooth, linear crescendo of acceleration that makes driving in the city incredibly relaxing. Even higher speeds retain this tranquillity, with wind and road noise notably well contained. On a British B-road, the suspension works hard to deal with the surface. Potholes and rough stretches are dealt with by a muted thud; the result is a cabin that is all the more comforting and serene, better insulated from the tumult outside.
- Flush Door Handles: Emerge upon approach for a seamless, high-tech welcome and improved aerodynamics.
- Alcantara and Burlap Trim: Creates a unique, luxurious cabin atmosphere that feels more like a boutique lounge than a car interior.
- Silent Electric Powertrain: Delivers smooth, instant acceleration for a refined and relaxing driving experience, especially in town.
- Advanced Suspension System: Effectively absorbs road imperfections, ensuring a quiet and comfortable ride even on uneven surfaces.

Urban Poise: Mastering the City in the DS 3 E-Tense
After tipping your hat to the valet and slipping behind the wheel, the first impression of bespoke luxury quickly evolves into one of refined, effortless motion. The bold forms of the cockpit and the high-grade materials used in its construction establish a unique atmosphere inside the cabin that stands in stark contrast to the cold, clinical interiors of many other EVs. This is a special area, but on the road is where the DS 3 E-Tense really starts to make an impact. Its personality shines through in the city, where the car just seems to know. Driving on busy city streets is a real relief, as the power steering is very light and the small size of the car helps a lot in manoeuvring through traffic. Whether making a tight three-point turn or squeezing into a difficult parallel parking spot, it feels surprisingly easy, taking the usual anxiety out of city driving.
The sense of control and confidence is further reinforced by the great visibility from the driver’s seat. The higher driving position ensures a clear forward vision, and blind spots are reduced by well-positioned pillars so you can keep track of your surroundings. It’s particularly apparent on the trickier junctions, and while sharing the road with two-wheeled traffic and pedestrians. Pulling away from stoplights or merging into traffic is best experienced in an EV motor, for torque’s instant accessibility results in a quiet and immediate reaction. It was just a smooth and deeply satisfying surge of power that let me ease effortlessly into gaps in the traffic. This quiet assurance is among the car’s most engaging features; even under the usual racket of a busy city, the interior is a peaceful and refined refuge, enabling calm and measured movement.
Good in the city, the DS 3 E-Tense also manages to be at the very least a competent and pretty fun travel companion on some more open roads. On the motorway, it adopts a quiet, composed manner and feels stable and planted, with road and wind noise remarkably well suppressed for a vehicle of its dimensions. You still have that initial surge of acceleration for pulling out on the highway, so you never feel like you’re in over your head when you’re moving into a faster lane. It’s on the twisty back roads, however, where the car shows its playful side. The lightness that makes city-driving so facile doesn’t come at the expense of precision or responsiveness, and you can seat so faultlessly through bends. The low centre of gravity, which is a frequent benefit of underfloor battery placement, also contributes to reduced body roll, resulting in a vehicle that is nimble and poised. It’s not just a driving experience that’s easy; it’s actually a driving experience that’s really fun, and that makes you want to get out on the road and enjoy getting there as much as you do getting there.

Silent Power: Understanding the DS 3 E-Tense Powertrain
Let’s get one thing straight: the DS 3 E-Tense isn’t designed to phone home with your synapses or be the fastest around the track. Its target performance is smoothness, efficiency and enough power to cope with most real driving conditions. The 115 kW electric motor (156 horsepower) offers a lively and responsive feeling that is more than adequate for day-to-day use. Delivering 270 Nm of torque instantly from standstill, the car is surprisingly quick off the line, which makes it ideal to scoot in and out of city traffic or to join a busy roundabout at a high pace. This isn’t a performance car by any traditional definition, but its power delivery is just the right match for its personality, allowing for quick, silent progress that never seems to be struggling or lacking power.
On the motorway, this emphasis on refined ability results in a serene and self-assured cruising experience. When you want to pass a slow vehicle, just a quick tap on the gas pedal brings a buttery, linear push of power that gets you through traffic with no muss or fuss. It’s no panicked downshifting or haranguing engine roar, just calm, effective pulling that can contribute to taking the edge off driver fatigue on a long trip, making the DS 3 E-Tense an unexpectedly competent long-haul partner. That effortless feel is emblematic of the entire powertrain in that it is all about steady, quiet output rather than maximum, aggressive output, which is fitting for the luxuriant and comfortable character of the car.
One of the best things about the powertrain is its regenerative braking system, which makes the driver’s efficiency and experience better. In the standard “Normal” driving mode, taking your foot off the accelerator causes a mild braking feel that imitates engine braking in a gasoline or diesel vehicle. This helps make the switch to an EV seamless and easy to understand for those new to electric vehicles. For those who want to extract maximum range and enjoy “single pedal” driving, engaging “B” mode will strengthen the effect of regenerative braking significantly. This is a game changer in stop-and-go city traffic in the Heavq. You Can Ease Off Your Left Foot and Still Slow Down in Your Own Way. You can control your speed almost entirely with the accelerator. You make your way through a traffic jam by modulating your speed with a single foot, making crawling through bottlenecks less stressful and more productive because you get back energy that otherwise would be lost.
- 115 kW (156 hp) Electric Motor: Delivers lively, instant torque for brisk acceleration in town and confident overtaking on motorways.
- Refined Power Delivery: Provides a smooth, linear, and silent surge of power, enhancing comfort and reducing driver fatigue on long journeys.
- Selectable Regenerative Braking (“B” mode): Allows for “one-pedal” driving in stop-and-go traffic, increasing efficiency and reducing driving stress.
- Natural Deceleration in “Normal” Mode: Mimics the feel of a traditional car’s engine braking, making the switch to electric driving feel intuitive.
Everyday Elegance: Is the DS 3 E-Tense Practical?
Its style and performance are no object if it doesn’t slot into your day easily. Vehicle design is not only beautiful but also functional, with the features for which you’ve been longing. Just turn the key and see! The brunch turned out to be a meal stop for the rainy-day commuters. The 350-litre boot, although not the largest in its segment, is well thought-out with a wide, square-shaped opening and a low loading lip that makes it easy to push heavy grocery bags or other bulky items into the boot. There’s no straining and lifting over a high sill, a tiny thing that adds up to big things as time rolls along. For a trip to the grocery store every week, the capacity is generous enough to stow shopping bags, backpacks, and just about any kind of day-out essentials without complicating the trip.
The car displays even greater flexibility when carrying large loads. Planning a weekend getaway, or a trip to the flat-pack furniture store? The rear seats fold 60/40, creating a larger, versatile cargo area. Although the rear seats do not fold down completely flat, the additional space is sufficient for a couple of large suitcases, a bicycle with the front wheel removed, or several boxes. This versatility means that the DS 3 E-Tense can cope with the occasional cry for more space and therefore be a contender for people who need more than just a city runabout, and that its graceful lines don’t completely sacrifice function.

Inside lies pragmatism. They have been blessed with quite a lot of comfort and support, and as a result of an extensive range of adjustments makes it quite easy for the driver and passenger to find their ideal seating position, both of them also on long trips. The interior from front to back is open and airy, with ingenious little stowage cubbies for phones, keys and drinks. At the rear, two adults will be comfortable but not luxurious for shorter rides around town. However, taller travellers may find the sloping roofline and sculpted C-pillars restrict headroom and slightly enclose them on longer journeys. E-Tense is a shining example of how compact exterior dimensions and practical interior space can go hand in hand, perfect for couples, solo drivers, or small families with little ones.
- 350-Litre Boot with Wide Opening: Makes loading and unloading bulky items like shopping or luggage easy and convenient.
- 60/40 Split-Folding Rear Seats: Provides the flexibility to transport larger items, adapting the car for everything from weekend trips to furniture runs.
- Supportive and Adjustable Front Seats: Ensure exceptional comfort for both driver and passenger, even on long-distance drives.
- Spacious Front Cabin with Smart Storage: Creates an airy, organised environment with ample room for personal belongings.
Your Digital Co-Pilot: DS 3 E-Tense Tech and Safety
The tech that’s built into the DS 3 E-Tense, too, is at the core of its premium allure, acting as a high-tech sidekick that makes life easier and safer. New for 2023 is the 10.3-inch high-definition touchscreen that is the heart of the vehicle. The display is surprisingly sharp and responsive, the colours are vivid, and the graphics are clean enough to be able to read everything at a glance. Throughout my test drive, there was nothing but frictionless connectivity when hooking up my iPhone via Apple CarPlay. Within seconds, my go-to navigation, music and podcast apps were on the big screen, reacting immediately to finger taps. This seamless integration eliminates the frustration usually associated with in-car systems, so you can keep your eyes on the road while staying connected.
Providing a nice complement to the central touchscreen is the available digital driver’s display. This personalised display shows you all your essential driving information in a clean, modern interface, replacing old-school analogue dials. You can switch between feeds to focus on navigation instructions, media playback or comprehensive energy usage information. The fact that you can tailor the display to your needs is a great boon for detouring. With turn-by-turn directions right in your line of sight, you’re looking away from the road less, and that’s a small detail that makes a big difference in confidence and safety.
In terms of safety, DSG Automobiles has evidently favoured driver assistance in its priorities, filling the E-Tense with a host of features as standard. City-driving lifesaver Like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking monitors the road ahead and takes action if it senses a crash is about to happen. The Lane-keep assist was very useful on the motorway, as it applies mild steering torque to keep the car centred in its own lane, which helps to reduce fatigue on long drives. Even more sophisticated systems are added with higher levels, such as the one tested. Adaptive cruise control makes motorway driving easier by maintaining a predetermined distance between you and the car ahead, and a 360-degree camera system helps make difficult manoeuvres, such as parallel parking, less of a panic-inducing event.
- 10.3-inch HD Touchscreen: Provides a crisp, responsive, and easy-to-use interface for navigation, media, and seamless smartphone integration.
- Customizable Digital Driver’s Display: Places essential information like navigation and energy use directly in the driver’s line of sight, minimising distractions.
- Comprehensive Safety Suite: Standard features like automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist enhance driver confidence and security.
- Advanced Driver Aids: Available features like adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera significantly reduce stress during motorway driving and tight parking situations.
The Smart Money: Analysing DS 3 E-Tense Running Costs
One of the strongest reasons to consider an electric vehicle (EV) is the prospect of much lower running costs, and the DS 3 E-Tense can strongly lay claim to that accolade. What’s more, the largest saving is realised by refuelling. Because we charge mainly at home, and especially on an off-peak electric rate, our costs are very low. Depending on your electricity provider, you can pay as low as £10to £12 for a full charge of the 54 kWh battery. It has a claimed range of 250 miles, but our real-world testing indicated that’s more likely to be 200 miles or so in mixed driving. Even with this real-world number, the cost per mile is still just a fraction of what you’d pay for petrol or diesel, so every trip is that much more affordable.

For road trips beyond the car’s single-charge range, the public rapid charging network is critical. The DS 3 E-Tense supports 100kW DC rapid charging, which means that the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. And that feature has big implications for long trips, eliminating range anxiety, which can be a barrier for some drivers. On one longer ride in our test week, a quick cup of coffee was enough to give us more than 150 miles of range. Although public rapid charging costs more than charging from home, it has the convenience and speed to allow DS 3 E-Tense to be considered for more than just local rides.
Cost of fuel aside, the simplicity of the electric drivetrain means maintenance costs are lower over the life of the vehicle. There are far fewer moving parts than in a conventional internal combustion engine, so there are no routine oil changes, and maintenance is simpler and less frequent. Key parts, such as brake pads, also tend to last far longer, due to the plentiful use of regenerative braking, which performs a large part of the work of slowing the car down while juicing the battery up. To give you peace of mind over your long-term investment, the high-voltage battery is backed by a DS Automobiles special comprehensive warranty for a period of eight years or 100,000 miles, which certifies that the battery will maintain at least 70% of its initial capacity. It’s this reassurance, coupled with the low day-to-day running costs, that makes ownership both surprisingly affordable and stress-free.
- Low-Cost Home Charging: With an off-peak tariff, the full charge can be only £10, which means there is going to be very cheap driving every day.
- 100kW Rapid Charging Capability: Recharges the battery from 10% to 80% within 30 minutes for easy long-drive travel.
- Reduced Maintenance Needs: The simple electric drivetrain needs less service and has fewer wear parts, saving money in the long run.
- 8-Year Battery Warranty: Enjoy peace of mind well into the future with coverage for up to 100,000 miles, which supports battery health and performance.
Style vs. Substance: How the DS 3 E-Tense Faces Its Rivals
The segment of small electric SUVs is crowded, with many great rivals clamouring for your attention. For you to get a good understanding of the value proposition of the DS 3 E-Tens, it is important to analyse how it stacks up against its nearest competitors. The likes of the Peugeot e-2008, Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV are all highly competitive, and variously top the class for practicality or outright range. Yet the DS 3 E-Tense deliberately takes another route. It’s not trying to win a numbers game on a spreadsheet; it’s trying to create an experience, distinct and design-led and luxurious in a way that far too many of its more mainstream competitors just don’t offer.
The Peugeot e-2008 is probably its closest rival, as it comes from the same parent group (Stellantis) and runs on a very similar underpinning electric platform. The e-2008 is an excellent all-rounder, with a bit more boot space and a more traditional family car type interior that many will find immediately practical and familiar. But where Peugeot’s is handsome and modern, the DS 3 E-Tense is haute couture. The DS sets itself apart with its progressive design cues, jewel-like treatment, and a cabin that is differentiated from the normal internal offerings as bespoke and luxurious, a host of QAD © Alcantara and unique tactile elements. Electing between the two tends to be a matter of taste: the e-2008 is the sensible, well-dressed option, the DS 3 E-Tense is the showy, statement-making one for those who want their wheels to get people talking.
Looking beyond, the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV sit at the sensible and value-oriented end of this list, representing what most buyers would feel comfortable with. Both of these two Korean models have become one of the best real-world range, the most efficient electricity consumers and the most heavily equipped ones with standard equipment among those EVs, sometimes even with a higher price tag.A nd, while they’re certainly not cheap, they’re incredibly practical and have long warranties, so they’re a sensible buy for customers who are perhaps less dazzled by shiny things and more interested in maximising utility and minimising long-term ownership cost. Yet there’s none of the soul, personality or individual character pack that is the DS 3 E-Tense. The interior materials and design are utilitarian rather than luxurious, and the exterior styling is bland and conventional. The DS is for those who feel the absolute must-have purveyors of premium materials, the complexity of design and the sense of occasion every time they get behind the wheel, who will happily take a minor compromise in ultimate range or boot capacity for a significantly richer, more premium experience.

- Premium Interior Feel: Provides a lounge-style boutique experience with upscale materials such as Alcantara that mainstream rivals like the Kona and Niro EV just can’t compete with.
- Focus on Individuality: Targets drivers who value character and a sense of occasion rather than just practical needs, such as the largest boot capacity.
- Shared Platform Benefits: Although more stylish, it benefits from tried and tested electric technology shared by skilled rivals such as the Peugeot e-2008.
Crafted For a Discerning Driver: Who is the DS 3 E-Tense For?
The DS 3 E-Tense isn’t a car built for everyone; it’s a vehicle with a personality, aimed at a certain type of driver who cares about looks and a premium experience as much as practical use. Style-conscious city dwellers, really. For this city dweller juggling the minutiae of life, the car’s small size, light steering and whisper-quiet electric powertrain make rush-hour traffic less of a hassle. This driver likes to pull into the office relaxed and unflustered, having floated past reveal after reveal in a quiet, well-appointed cabin. They need a car that says something about them without shouting, and the DS 3 E-Tense with its elegant design and jewel-like elements ticks that box perfectly.
The car has a strong appeal among premium-conscious couples or those trading down from larger, more traditional executive cars. For them, the attention to detail and sophisticated driving experience are everything. They are used with a certain level of luxury, and they won’t put quality above when they move to an EV. The use of Alcantara, the high level of craftsmanship and technology in the DS 3 E-Tense make the change feel like an upgrade rather than a downgrade. It’s the ideal answer for weekend breaks with enough practicality for luggage to enable a relaxed and quiet drive, comfortable and involving, whether on motorways or winding country roads. It’s really for people who love the finer points of a more curated driving experience.
And the DS 3 E-Tense is the perfect small family car that doesn’t compromise on style. It may not have the cavernous space of some rivals, but it’s more than capable of handling the school run, weekly shop and family day out. The quality of the interior materials is robust enough to handle a busy family, and the all-encompassing safety features let you sleep easily at night. This buyer wants a car that can double as a practical family haulier for the week, but that still looks like a slick, aspirational design product when the kids are not in the back. It’s for the parent who wants to drive a car that reflects who they are, and not just blend in with the crowd.
