Lexus UX 300e: Design, Features, and Everyday Usability Reviewed in Full

The Lexus UX 300e is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle model. From the very first moments, it is clear that Lexus has taken this introduction and polished it so that, like all their other vehicles, you feel absolute quality, refinement and ride quality that is beyond anyone else’s. I ran the UX 300e through its paces on an all-day drive that took me from packed city traffic to open-country roads. The car was revolutionary: the interior was quiet, its throttle response was buttery smooth, and there was a general sense of ease in driving that was rare. Settling into the driver’s seat, a sense of comfort and knowing what to expect welcomes you as Lexus has seamlessly bridged the gap between traditional vehicles and EVs, delivering for both new and returning drivers.

Dodging cars through the streets of New York City, the small size of the UX 300e, together with its light and responsive steering, made it very easy to take tight corners and park in tight spaces. You then add a thimbleful of Maserati-esque panache torque from the electric motor, which provides a welcome bit of agility to what has otherwise been a boring stop-and-go ride, working a little automotive magic on the grind of traffic. Only on the motorway did the excellent soundproofing come fully into its own. That hushed cabin remained at higher speeds, successfully drowning out the distractions of wind and road noise. This extraordinary level of refinement is one that Lexus has perfected over the years, and it’s just as evident in their very first electric vehicle, ensuring a tranquil and poised environment on every drive.

While the UX 300e isn’t going to offer neck-snapping acceleration and razor-sharp handling like one of its sportier rivals, it does deliver a supremely relaxing, controlled driving experience. You could say it’s designed to calm your mind and make you feel better, at least that’s what it aims to do, whether you’re chauffeuring the kids to school or driving cross-country on a long road trip. This is not just an electric car; the electric car is a value expression. With the UX 300e, Lexus is perfectly positioned to demonstrate how it plans to infuse the essence of the iconic brand’s luxury and reliability into the electric age and establish a benchmark for the rest of the brand’s electrified future.

Lexus UX 300e

Lexus UX 300e: A First Drive Perspective

Therefore, the launch of the Lexus UX 300e went beyond a new model launch and became a new dawn for the brand. Right from the start, Lexus indicated it brought the customary rigour for refinement, quality and comfort to this introduction. I got my first taste of the UX 300e in a full day of driving on a variety of terrain, including stop-and-go city traffic, highway cruising and twisting back-country highways. It was a distinctly distinctive car: the cabin was quietly serene, the throttle response was astounding smooth, and the driving in general seemed so effortless. Settling down behind the wheel, there is a welcome sense of familiarity: Lexus has made the switch to an electric vehicle feel perfectly natural, whether buyers are new or returning.

In the city, the UX 300e’s compact proportions and light, responsive steering made it a doddle to thread the needle through congested city streets and slot into tight parking spaces. The immediate torque from the electric motor adds a refreshing element of nimbleness, making the usually brain-numbing stop-and-go even a little bit fun. On a motorway once, the car’s extraordinary soundproofing really came into its own. And at speed, too, it remains a barely audible cocoon which effectively shields occupants from the chaotic turbulence and mechanical racket of road and wind. This level of refinement is something that Lexus has been perfecting for decades, and that expertise has been seamlessly carried over to their first electric model, allowing for a calm and controlled experience, no matter where your journey takes you.

The UX 300e does not need to snap your head back like some sportier rivals, or handle with razor-sharp precision, but what it does have is a supremely calm, collected driving feel. It’s made to smooth out the rough edges of your daily life, whether you’re suffering through a commute or taking to the road for a distance run. This isn’t just another electric car; it’s a statement. ʻThe UX 300e is a bold expression of how the Lexus brand will deliver on its core promise of luxury and dependability in the electric era, setting the standard for the brand’s electrified future.

  • Exceptional Refinement: Delivers a serenely quiet cabin, providing a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere for all occupants.

  • Outstanding Comfort: Features smooth throttle response and a stress-free ride, making every journey enjoyable.

Sculpted Presence: A Deep Dive into the UX 300e’s Design and Craftsmanship

The Lexus UX 300e projects a bold and confident road presence, achieved by a design language that is as multifaceted as it is daring. The body is a composition of clean-cut lines and a contemporary small SUV profile that makes the vehicle stand out in traffic. At the front, the signature spindle grille, a core element of the Lexus DNA, takes centre stage, while the narrow triple-projector LED headlamps impart an aggressive appearance to the vehicle. At the rear, a beautiful light bar spans the full width of the car and leads to fins, which not only give a space-age look but also generate downforce for aerodynamic stability. The perfectly sculpted body is a dynamic expression of its interplay with light and shadow, and the elegant Celestial Blue and Sonic Titanium create a stunning image of the deep soul. This well-baked-in aero styling not only makes the car look good, but it also makes the car more efficient by guiding air flow in a way that proves it’s possible for form and function to co-exist.

When you step inside the UX 300e, it’s immediately clear that the brand’s commitment to exceptional craftsmanship is still very much intact. It is well well-thought-out blend of high-grade materials and a driver-centric layout that creates both a luxurious and friendly environment. You’ll see this immediately when you grab hold of the wheel; raised leather-wrapped stitching circles the rim, and each and every button and switch throws satisfyingly tactile feedback signifying quality. It really speaks to the quality. High-quality materials such as soft-touch instrument panel, optional sashiko pattern quilted leather seats are tough and stylish enough. Finishing touches, including a warm and welcoming glow at night from the ambient light and body-coloured dash panels (available), inject a bit of youthful sophistication for a touch of personalisation. It’s a place that was designed for more than just driving; it was designed for just for the ride.

The cabin, once a haven of plush comfort and high quality, is now more technology-laden.  Good driver-focused visibility and comfortable access to most controls. The redesigned touchscreen infotainment system provides a whole lot more over the generation gone by trackpad controller in terms of ease of use, responsiveness, intuitiveness, and overall user friendliness. Yet the journey is not without small pain points. Some features, such as the physical climate control buttons tucked beneath the display, seem a bit dated compared with the fully digital solutions offered by some key rivals. Prior to this, the UX 300e’s cabin attains an extraordinary fusion of forward-looking innovation and time-honoured, instinctive warmth that’s warm, comfortable and inviting, giving a new depth of luxury to utility without possessing that of the Lexus makes a very clear and powerful statement in the electric vehicle space.

Effortless Power: Analysing the UX 300e’s Battery and Performance

The Lexus UX 300e battery pack of 72.8kWh is the major point of the exceptionally smooth and refined drive. The capacity is remarkable, but the usable capacity is approximately 51kWh for an amount of energy that Lexus has engineered to hold up well through long battery life. That equates to an official WLTP driving range of up to 280 miles (450km) from one charge. I consistently achieved a usable 220-mile range on the road as I drove this variety of city commuting, spirited B-road driving, and interstate cruising. That’s a pretty respectable number for a premium compact crossover, and it’s more than enough to get you through most daily drives. This means the UX 300e is not just a city car, but a faithful companion on journeys further afield, if only you think about your logistics.

On lengthy motorway journeys, particularly when driving at a steady high speed, the range does noticeably diminish, as has been the case with many EVs. That requires a little more planning on road travels, because it pushes drivers to map out charging stops on their way. UX 300e, but that’s compensated for by its calm, predictable responses. The electric motor producing 204hp and 300Nm drives the front wheels. This results in a 0-62mph (0-100 km/h) time of 7.5 seconds, which feels quite lively on the road. Delivering the power is surprisingly linear and controlled, and there’s enough punch to feel safe tossing a few tyres without the aggressive, neck-snapping jolt that comes with some of the more performance-oriented EVs. It’s a pairing that makes sense for Lexus, which sought a more soothing driving environment and not one that descended into the survival-branched instantly out with lip-cracking G-forces.

Car flexibility is further boosted by adjustable driving modes. With Eco mode engaged, the throttle response is mellowed out, and the climate control system is set to conserve energy so that you can get the most from the range. Conversely, in Sport mode, the throttle is more sensitive and the car becomes a little more eager, which translates into a more emotional driving experience, if that’s the sort of thing you’re looking for. I was particularly taken by the UX 300e’s performance in the perpetually wet and nippy conditions so clearly on display in the UK. The car was firm and stable over even wet grass, with no detectable slip or skid. Battery performance was also consistently high with the range, although naturally, the total range would be slightly less in colder weather. This constant character also ensures that the driving is comfortable and predictable, and this predictability therefore makes the UX 300e a car you can rely on and trust, and you can have the same experience no matter what the weather is like outside.

Powering Up: UX 300e Charging and Efficiency Explained.

Keeping the Lexus UX 300e powered is a straightforward matter of plugging in, but there are caveats that I believe prospective owners should know about. The vehicle is capable of being charged at home or on the road, but its functionality is not quite the same as that of some competitors. UX 300e fast charging. With DC fast charging, the battery can be recharged with up to 50kW. At the public charger, this came down to a  charging session of a little less than 50 minutes to replenish the battery from 20% to 80% state of charge. That tasty real-world encore added about 140 miles, not a bad distance between pit stops on a long haul. However, it’s worth noting that lots of the competition have also now got the option to charge at 100kW or more, which will cut down on waiting time. UX 300e Owner: The UX 300e means road trips require a little more forethought and longer stops.

For most users, charging will likely be done at home on a daily basis, and this is where the UX 300e excels. The vomiting and diarrhoea lasted two days. The vomiting and diarrhoea lasted two days. A full charge from empty will take about eight hours on a standard 7kW wall box charger. This nighttime charging routine is enough for me, and it’s nice to have a finished charge in the morning. The charging slot is on the right side of the vehicle, just behind the rear right door, so they are easy to reach for either as you back in or pull forward into a parking spot. Along with neat storage, a cable storage drawer is built into the boot floor, and you can lock the cables in there so they don’t fly around while you drive.

The UX 300e proves to be a good real-world efficiency result for the class. Under a range of road conditions, the car was achieving about 3.6 miles per kilowatt hour (kWh). This efficiency is a big factor in his low running cost. And when charging at home, especially if you are on a cheap off-peak electricity tariff, charging costs a tiny fraction of what filling up a petrol or diesel car costs, which makes daily commuting incredibly cost-effective. The 104-mile UX 300e can be connected to all the major public charge point networks such as Gridserve, BP Pulse and Ionity, among others, allowing for charging on the go and not only at home, granting further flexibility and peace of mind for prospective owners. While its DC charging speed isn’t the fastest, its strong efficiency and easy home charging make it a very reasonable and practical option for a lot of drivers.

  • 50kW DC Fast Charging: Adds around 140 miles of range in under 50 minutes, suitable for planned stops on longer trips.

  • 7kW Home Charging: Completes a full charge in approximately 8 hours overnight, ensuring daily convenience.

  • 3.6 miles/kWh Efficiency: Delivers competitive real-world efficiency, translating to low running costs.

  • Broad Network Compatibility: Works seamlessly with major UK charging networks for easy top-ups on the go.

Composed Comfort: Exploring the UX 300e’s Ride and Handling

Comfort is paramount in the Lexus UX 300e, and you feel this right away when you get behind the wheel. It’s as though they have been engineered to eliminate the ripples of the road, and they certainly are delightful to drive over the now and then nasty, potholed surfaces which constitute the staple diet of roads in Britain. The car solemnly climbs over bumps and holes in the road and coarse asphalt that few other cars can match. The nuance with which passengers are protected from unexpected dabbling is even more accessible off city streets lined with speed bumps (and so the UX 300e continues to hold incredibly steady while maintaining buttery smooth, a calm drive for everyone who gets aboard it. This commitment to comfort does not come at the expense of control; the car feels firmly planted and reassuring, making for a ride that’s relaxing and distinctly Lexus.

But turn off the straights and onto the tighter and more technical B-roads, and the UX 300e reveals more of its predictable, stably themed self. It’s not a car that you have to drive aggressively, but it definitely takes corners with a sense of confidence and a small amount of body roll. The steering is light and accurate, so it is easy to manoeuvre and position on the road, but you certainly don’t get as much fine detail as you would in a sportier model. It is the natural give and take Lexus says is to be expected when you prioritise simplicity and a stress-free drive rather than dynamic engagement. The car is always planted and stable, even around a set of bends; you’d never suspect the weather wasn’t radiant and calm, and it made you think it could take the temperature of any climate with no problem.

Rough terrainOne of the more surprising aspects of the UX 300e’s driving dynamics is its refinement on motorways. The cabin exudes a peaceful serenity with astounding noise isolation from wind, road, and ttyrenoises. This quietness is a notable comfort upgrade over many rivals and some ICE models as well. This, of course, results in the UX 300e being one of the best choices for distance cruising. This tranquillity paves the way for uttering words and also helps with road fatigue in long-haul drives. Ultimately, the Lexus UX 300e’s ride and handling are perfectly in line with what its core should have been. A very comfortable, refined, and relaxing driving experience (not such that would make it fret on lap times).

  • Comfort-Tuned Suspension: Soaks up bumps and potholes with ease, providing a smooth and composed ride on rough roads.

  • Stable B-Road Handling: Remains predictable and secure through corners, with good body control for a comfortable drive.

  • Light and Precise Steering: Makes the car easy to manoeuvre in town and effortless to guide on open roads.

  • Exceptional Cabin Quietness: Offers superior sound insulation for a hushed and relaxing atmosphere, especially at motorway speeds.

Smart and Secure: Technology and Safety in the UX 300e

The Lexus UX 300e is equipped with a capsule of modern technologies and advanced safety features that contribute to convenience and peace of mind. Among the highlights is the redesigned infotainment system that is now centred on a crisp 10.3-inch touchscreen. It’s a big and great step forward from the touchpad system of old, with a much-improved response time and a much cleaner, more intuitive menu layout. The steps to enable wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are seamless, and it’s simple and seamless to tap into your smartphone for maps, songs, and calls. This wireless layout removes the clutter from the cabin and makes you feel clean right from the moment you step in.

On the safety front, the Lexus Safety System+ is standard on the UX 300e. This comprehensive suite of driver aids includes systems that protect occupants and prevent accidents. It is in traffic flowing well; the system keeps a safe distance from the front car smoothly and reduces the tiredness of the driver during long driving. It is complemented by a predictive lane-keeping assist system, which influences the steering wheel to keep the vehicle centred in its lane. Blind-spot monitoring also provides crucial alerts for vehicles that are lurking in your blind spot, and the 360-degree panoramic view monitor showcases the vehicle from a bird’s eye perspective, which is extremely useful when driving in crowded parking lots or when you spot things lying low close to the front end of your vehicle.1 While the basics are strong and the overall package is solid, the UX 300e lags behind a few rivals here and there. For one, it lacks a head-up display, which is increasingly common in this top-tier segment and helps to keep the driver’s eyes on the road. While more resolution would be better, the 360-degree camera footage is useful anyway. That exclusion is hardly a blow against the overall UX 300e package, which marries intuitive infotainment and a comprehensive safety suite into a well-rounded and secure offering. It has all the right tech to enable confident and comfortable driving every day, which fits perfectly with the objective of the car being a comforting, easy-to-live-with EV.

  • 10.3-Inch Touchscreen: Provides a fast, intuitive, and user-friendly interface for all infotainment functions.

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto: Delivers seamless and convenient smartphone integration without the clutter of cables.

Everyday Elegance: Living with the Lexus UX 300e

If you must be impressed by a luxury car more on closed, controlled roads than between the stoplights, it certainly has to keep up a battery of daily pace. The Lexus UX 300e is no different; its small, trendy exterior conceals more practicality than you would expect. Despite its slimline proportions, the car boasts a well-balanced 367-litre boot. During my testing, it held me through a full week of shopping, a couple of carry-on suitcases for a weekend jaunt, and even bulkier items like a folded stroller. When you need to lug something big, I mean, really big, the rear seatbacks fold flat to transform the cargo space into something worth hauling, thanks to an adaptable kind of can-do logistics that is a must in this day and age.

The interior designer and material specialist at Lexus collaborated closely to ensure that the ergonomics, usability of storage and quality feel delivered a consistent experience, and LEXUS was able to verify that such was the case. The intelligent design is combined with a series of pockets all around the cabin to keep your daily essentials close at hand and organised. The well-sized glove compartment, bottle-friendly door pockets, and centre console with compartments for your phone and wallet all make it easy to keep this space tidy. Getting in and out of the UX 300e is a fairly simple process, assisted by the high ground clearance, which is common among crossovers. The seat height and angle are excellent for looking out of the front, and with the large windows, it genuinely makes the driver and front passenger feel as if they can breathe. In terms of space, the back seat can be flat-out regarded as OK, although the front is spacious. A pair of adults can sit side-by-side for short trips, but on long hauls, the legroom may come up just a little short for towering travellers. But if there’s one thing the UX 300e can do, it’s be an urban sidekick. Together with the excellent turning circle, this means it can easily handle bustling city streets and cramped, multi-level car parks. This is further complemented with front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, allowing you to see your car’s surroundings from up and down. This feature helps you back into tight spaces with confidence and ease, making the UX 300e a surprisingly practical option for everyday use.

The Financial Sense of Serenity: Analysing UX 300e Running Costs

Among the best arguments to switch to an electric car are the cost savings over the life of the car, and the Lexus UX 300e definitely makes a financial case for itself. Day-to-day, the biggest saving is on fuel, or, in this instance, electricity. For those who can charge at home with a wall box charger, the expenses are negligible. If you plug the car in overnight to charge on a decent off-peak electricity tariff, a full charge could cost you as little as £7. That’s more than 200 miles of real-world range for less than the cost of two gallons of gasoline. Even when you use the public charging network, the costs are substantially lower than traditional fuels, so every trip you take is a little less expensive.

In addition to the significant savings on fuel, the UX 300e offers significant financial benefits in the form of tax breaks that make it an even more attractive option, especially for those who live in the city and work there. This electric[blank] vehicle is exempt from road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty), and, if you are lucky enough to be driving in London, a daily pay-as-you-go London Congestion Charge. This, on its own, can save thousands of pounds a year for drivers. The rebates offered by the government are a way of encouraging the use of cleaner vehicles, meaning the premium experience of driving a Lexus is now within closer reach and is more financially responsible than ever before. And then there’s the cost to own, which is helped by Lexus’ legendary reliability and amazing warranty. The brand regularly scores top marks in dependability surveys, so you can breathe a little easier when the unexpected does need fixin’. The high-volume main battery is covered by an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty to give you peace of mind that the heart of the vehicle is protected for the long term. This reassurance, paired with convenient service intervals, means the UX 300e isn’t just a cheap car to keep lugging around day after day, but a should-just-run reliability long-run investment.

  • Low Recharging Costs: Enjoy significant savings with home charging costing as little as £7 for a full charge.

  • Tax and Charge Exemptions: Avoid annual road tax and costly city-centre congestion charges.

  • Lexus Reliability: Benefit from the brand’s industry-leading reputation for dependability, reducing unexpected maintenance costs.

  • Reduced Servicing Needs: Experience lower maintenance costs compared to internal combustion engine vehicles.

A Class Apart: How the UX 300e Stacks Up Against Rivals

Entering the small premium electric crossover segment, the Lexus UX 300e does have some points of differentiation. It does compete with the strong Volvo XC40 Recharge and Mercedes-Benz EQA, but it is not daring enough to go arm-in-arm with them on the road. Instead of focusing on maximum power output or maximum driving distance, elements that have shaped Lexus for years, the UX 300e embodies a set of simple principles: unrivalled refinement, obsessively detailed quality and a tranquil driving experience. Apparently, this conscious exclusion places the model into a class where performance numbers matter most.

Just place them side by side with the Volvo XC40 Recharge, and the difference is glaring. The Volvo usually has more horsepower and faster acceleration, for those drivers who like to feel sporty. However, the UX 300e does offer a far more cosy and stable driving experience. The Lexus floats over bumps and shakes where the XC40’s ride can feel a bit harsh on a rough road, and the noise gets left outside as well, its interior holding the silence as if it were a secret. And then, while the Mercedes EQA is also tech-forward and feels more overtly luxe in that particular form of luxury, the UX 300e is yet another form of luxury in that which refers to impeccable craftsmanship, high-quality materials and the assurance that goes with getting older well. The Lexus seems like it would endure a long time, an understatement of the brand’s legendary durability. [Note: The Lux is the snazziest car on the road in a tiny segment of very pricey luxury compact cars, so this assertion is rather ridiculous.] But that’s not to say the UX 300e has no compromises. Its 50kW DC charging speed sorely trails the Volvo and Mercedes, resulting in even longer breaks while on long drives. Of course, the back seat is even more cramped in the squarish XC40. But if you’re the right buyer, they’re all very livable compromises. The UX 300e is not checking the boxes of being the most powerful, best equipped, or fastest-charging EV. It’s also the most comfortable and quiet, most reliable, and it just frankly takes all the stress out of owning a car, which is the ultimate Lexus gift. It is aimed at the discerning driver who values tranquility and refinement over sheer power.”

  • Superior Refinement: Excels in ride comfort and cabin quietness compared to sportier rivals like the Volvo XC40 Recharge.

  • Slower DC Charging: Acknowledges a key area where rivals hold an advantage for long-distance travel.

In other words, every vehicle has its compromises. The UX 300e charges at 50kW DC, slower than some competitors, which means a bit more planning will be required for longer journeys. Rear passenger headroom though is not as generous in the EX30 as it is in some competitors, but the accommodation is sufficient for small families or couples. But this also feels less like flaw and more a conscious trade-off for a car that knows exactly what it wants to be. It pursues long-lasting durability and quiet driving rather than some transient class-topping charging number or cavernous interiors. If you’re more the type to like a calm, collected ride that’s more focused on comfort than handling, the Lexus UX 300e is a surprisingly good choice. It delivers on what you’d expect from a classic electric crossover with the lowest running costs, a complete set of safety gear, and the peace of mind that comes with Lexus’ time-tested dependability. It’s not just an electric car; it’s a manifestation of polished, laid-back driving. Book your reservation with The.car today, and we’ll organize a FREE test drive just for you.
