Real-World Review: Living with the 2024 Mustang Mach-E Extended Range AWD

The Mustang name invokes history, raw power, rumbling V8S and exceptional American muscle. So when Ford revealed an all-electric SUV with the iconic pony badge, the reactions were equal parts excitement and scepticism. Jump ahead to today, and not only has the Mustang Mach-E proven the naysayers wrong, but it has also established itself as a pioneer in the electric vehicle revolution. It is the 2024 Mustang Mach-E Extended Range (ER) AWD, which is creating nothing but positive ripples, and with good reason. It is a superb combination of heritage, future proofing and real-world feasibility.

This is not just an electric car, not just a statement. It is a performance SUV with five-door practicality that can thrill even the most die-hard driving enthusiasts. For 2024, Ford is upgrading the formula to include more advanced battery technology that will deliver more range and more charging, new software that will provide a better user experience, and a new Bronze Appearance Package that adds a bit of bespoke style. This review will take a look at what the 2024 Mustang Mach-E ER AWD is really like to live with, going beyond the spec sheet to provide insight into its everyday use, comfort, and character. Mach-E ER AWD: Classic fun with a modern twist.

The Mach-E ER AWD is fully loaded to make everyday travelling feel like an adrenaline rush, and when you take the wheel to hit the open road for a weekend getaway, you can expect nothing less. Mustang Mach-E AWD: Manufacturer Overview & Design Inspirations

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E: attacking style with a look to the future. While the brand’s attitudes and engineering stance stem from over a century of automotive manufacturing, with the Mach-E, it turned a corner and entered a new age focused on electrification, connectivity, and sustainability. The order was simple: Build an electric car that consumers would want to buy, not one that they’d be forced to buy. That meant it needed to be more than simply efficient; it needed to be exhilarating and carry the spirit from one of its most beloved nameplates.

“Human-centric design” guided the design and engineering process. That every single thing, down to the powertrain and the UI, was created around the driver’s experience. Ford’s dedication to pushing forward is further seen in the vehicle’s design, which was ‘designed from the ground up’ as an EV to deliver maximum interior space and ‘intelligent’ OTP and seamlessly integrate the latest technology. Sustainability is also central, with the Mach-E sporting a 100% vegan interior including high-quality Sensico® synthetic leather, proving that luxury and saving the planet aren’t mutually exclusive.

Ford’s vision for the Mustang Mach-E is rooted in a wish to be a catalyst for change in the auto industry. With high-tech battery solutions, sustainable materials and intelligent production methods, Ford makes the Mach-E a responsible innovation benchmark. The company makes significant investments in renewable energy for its manufacturing plants and, throughout the vehicle’s life cycle, to the extent possible, prioritises recyclability. This means owning a Mach-E is not just making a statement on embracing new technology; it’s a pledge to a cleaner, smarter future, one that benefits the individual driver as well as the world outdoors.

Design & Exterior

The 2024 Mustang Mach-E’s exterior is a lesson in reimagining an iconic design language for a contemporary age. It holds that unmistakable Mustang DNA, from the bold front end and signature tri-bar rear lights, to the powerful shoulders and elongated bonnet. But it is completely its own car. The sealed-off grille has an aerodynamic function, as well as giving a visual indication of the fact that the vehicle is electric, and the coupe-like roofline is sporty, making the T-Roc look like an SUV crafted in the image of a traditional coupé.

This architecture is not just lip service. Every curve and line has been refined to be more aerodynamic to help increase the range. Small things like the E-Latch door mechanism, which swaps traditional door handles for a button, go towards an unbroken side profile. The car’s wide, low stance suggests hidden performance brawn. It is a head-turning and conversation-stopping design that perfectly marries classic heritage with progressive design.

Debuting for 2024 is the Rally trim, which goes even further for those who want to take their Mach-E on light off-road trails, that is. Mustang Mach-E AWD: Performance & Driving Experience

At the core of what makes the 2024 Mustang Mach-E ER AWD so good is its exhilarating performance. The dual-motor system (one motor is on each axle) produces 346 combined horsepower and a strong 428 lb-ft of torque. This equates to a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds only. Rather than being a petrol engine, which has to be revved up, the electric motors produce that torque straight away, throwing you back into your seat with a smooth, silent and unstoppable wave of acceleration. Because of the single-speed transmission, power delivery is smooth and uninterrupted by shifting gears, which results in a very fluid and quick response when you drive.

What makes performance even more startling is how “normal” it feels in day-to-day use. Whether it’s gridlock in the city or a run on the highway, the Mustang Mach-E ER AWD is ready immediately, its prompt, confident response imparting assurance to the driver. The AWD system brings an added level of confidence, particularly on wet or slick roads, as it helps turn traction into restraint, no matter the weather.

You can do a lot with a Mustang Mach-E ER AWD in one day and still have enough energy left over to change its charm on a dime. In “Whisper” mode, the car glides silently along, placating occupants from road undulations and almost eliminating noise. But throw the Mach-E into sportier modes and the steering tightens, the throttle response feels more urgent, and the underlying athleticism of the Mach-E shines through. Firm but well-damped, the suspension strikes a fine balance between comfort and control, and it holds the car on rails during spirited driving without making it a chore to drive around town. The result is a driving dynamic that seems designed from the ground up for enthusiasts and families to share, at once entertaining and refined.

Powertrain & Acceleration

The all-wheel-drive automatically adjusts the power sent to the front and rear axles to maximise traction while delivering confidence, particularly on slippery road surfaces. Since the heavy battery pack is placed under the floor, the low centre of gravity means the Mach-E has a planted feel and minimal body roll when cornering, more akin to a performance saloon than an SUV.

The steering is accurate and nicely weighted, with a good feel for the road. Ford has also put in three different drive modes: Whisper, Engage, and Unbridled, which change the throttle response, the steering, and even the inside ambient lighting and sound. Whisper is an appropriate setting for a leisurely city, with a virtually effortless throttle introduction. Engage offers a practical compromise between everyday motoring and the tail-out thrill of Unbridled, which sharpens the throttle, tightens the steering and adds an interior soundtrack for the ultimate in exhilaration. Ride quality is firm but not harsh, and the Stelvio manages to smooth out most road imperfections, so it’s a stellar companion on both spirited drives and long jaunts down the motorway.”

First Drive Review

My first genuine driving experience in the 2024 Mach-E ER AWD left me speechless. Pulling away from a stoplight in Unbridled mode, the instant acceleration was breathtaking, a silent, but unrelenting shove that puts the traffic around you immediately in the dust. It’s a feeling you can get hooked on and never get tired of. But what really impressed me was its poise on a twisting back road. The AWD system delivered such great traction that I was able to hold speed through turns with a level of confidence I would never expect from an SUV. Agile and willing to change direction, the car also contracted around me, hiding its size and weight extremely well. One-pedal driving, which utilises regenerative braking to slow the car as you take your foot off the accelerator, made that city driving a bit smoother, a bit more efficient. It’s a car that achieves the near-impossible in being both fun and extremely practical.

Drive modes for changing the character of your vehicle from a relaxed daily driver to a zippy sports SUV at the touch of a button.

Dual electric motors deliver instant torque for exhilarating, silent acceleration that makes passing on the freeway effortless. The sophisticated all-wheel-drive system instils you with confidence when driving in the rain or on a route with many curves.

Mustang Mach-E AWD: Interior, Comfort & Technology

Step inside the Mustang Mach-E, and the first thing you notice is a modern, spacious cabin that is all about technology. The aesthetic is stripped back with clean lines, and the bulk of the 15.5-inch portrait mode touchscreen engulfing the interior that manages almost every aspect of the car. This SYNC 4A is a smart, reactive system with a big volume dial embedded on the screen and a nice physical anchor point. The system is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and with its cloud-based connectivity, it will get over-the-air updates to stay current.

The materials throughout the interior are of high quality and feel like they will last. The seats are lined in breathable, high-qualitySensico® synthetic leather, which makes them perfectly comfortable and supportive seats for long journeys. There is fine ergonomics with a distinct 10.2” digital instrument cluster relaying relevant info directly in front of the driver’s eyes. There’s plenty of practicality, too. Storage is also in abundance, with a multifunctional centre console, roomy door pockets and a 13.3-litre front trunk (or “frunk”), a useful area for keeping charging cables or shopping bags. The body of an SUV is specially designed to provide sufficient head and leg space for the passengers in front and back. It also has a roomy boot for luggage!

Driving Modes & Personalisation Technology

Mach-E technology has been created to simplify, enhance and secure your driving experience. The personalisation options are best in class. Your driver profile: When you link your driver profile to your key fob or use the Phone As A Key feature, your settings for your seats, mirrors, radio stations and even drive modes are saved. The car knows you as you come near and gets it ready for your journey.

The sexiest piece of technology is probably Ford BlueCruise, the hands-free highway driving assistant. On selected “Blue Zones” (pre-mapped motorways), you can let go of the wheel and let the car take care of steering, accelerating and braking. It’s a great, and really very well thought-out setup that minimises fatigue during long trips by keeping the car nicely centred even through the slight curves. Driver attention is monitored for safety, but its effortless operation feels like a real look at the future of autonomous driving.

Along with the Mach-E’s intuitive SYNC 4A interface and smartphone integration, this makes the cabin a wonderful place to be. With the Phone As A Key feature, you can leave your key fob at home and use your smartphone to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle for convenience. Ford BlueCruise fret-free driving on long freeway drives. The 15.5-inch touchscreen, which is enormous, combines controls into a single cohesive interface that frees the dashboard from clutter and allows users to easily access music, maps and vehicle controls.

Safety & Reliability

When you’re working with this much horsepower in a car, safety has to be at the top of the list. Ford has loaded the Mustang Mach-E with a broad array of safety amenities to keep you and your passengers safe. Its rugged structure and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) enable the vehicle to achieve top safety scores, including a 5-Star overall rating from Euro NCAP. The Battery Pack is stored in a strengthened, air-tight case and encased in an energy-absorbing structure that keeps it safe in a collision.

Active safety technology options are available, packaged as the standard Ford Co-Pilot360™. Features such as Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking can recognise a potential collision with other vehicles or pedestrians, and will initiate braking if a driver does not respond in time. Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert can warn you if there’s a car in your blind spot, helping you make safer lane changes. The systems play off each other well, escalating security in a levelled way, like a watchful co-pilot on every trip.

As a reviewer, that’s not just a feature among many; it’s peace of mind that will really be helpful. The Lane-Keeping System will lightly correct your steering to help keep you in your lane if you begin to unintentionally drift, which is so comforting on a weary drive home. Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go makes stop-and-go traffic much less stressful, maintaining a preset distance from the vehicle ahead. It’s no surprise that the Mach-E delivers on Ford’s epic reputation as a builder of safe, dependable vehicles. It feels like a rolling fortress, with state-of-the-art technology and robust engineering designed around your protection.

The 360-degree camera with split view is your eyes all around the car, making you park in tight places with ease and safety.

Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) makes a vital contribution to safety in stop-and-go traffic on city streets, and can help mitigate frontal collisions.

The rigid body structure and all-around airbags ensure peace of mind for you and your passengers.

Mustang Mach-E ER AWD vs Competitors

The market for full-size electric SUVs is highly competitive. The Mustang Mach-E ER AWD must contend with stiff competition, including the Tesla Model Y Long Range, Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD, and Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate AWD. They all offer something different, but the Mach-E carves out its own identity with a mix of style, performance and heritage.

The Tesla Model Y is commonly considered the gold standard thanks to better range and the ability to use the massive Supercharger network. But some purchasers see the minimalist interior as too bare, and its ride can be just as stiff as the Mach-E’s. The Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 ride on the same highly-regarded E-GMP platform featuring ultra-fast 800V charging and innovative, futuristic designs. While the EV6 delivers a sporty ride, the IONIQ 5 focuses on cabin space and comfort.

The Mustang Mach-E really distinguishes itself in driver engagement. It’s more like a traditional performance car to drive than its rivals, with a spirit that lives up to the Mustang name. Plus, its SYNC 4A infotainment system is also arguably more intuitive than Tesla’s all-screen solution, and its design brilliantly combines iconic styling cues with modern EV elements.
